Atomoxetine is most often prescribed for ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder} in both, children and adults. This condition is characterized by restlessness and lack of focus. Atomoxetine works to restore the balance of neurotransmitters in the patient’s brain.
Atomoxetine should be taken in strict compliance with your doctor’s instructions and directions on the prescription label. Do not alter dosage or the prescribed period of use without prior medical consult.
Generally, Atomoxetine should be taken once a day, in the morning or in the late afternoon, with a full glass of water. Individual prescriptions will depend on your condition and should be defined by your medical specialist.
DO not use the medication if you are allergic to it. If you experience any symptoms associated with allergies such as difficulty breathing, hives, swollen tongue etc., stop using the medication and seek urgent medical help.
Contact your medical specialist immediately if you experience any of the following: chest pain, uneven heartbeat; clouded consciousness; behavioral irregularities, aggression, hallucinating; nausea, stomach pain, itching sensation, lack of appetite, dark-colored urine, yellow-colored skin and whites of the eyes; high blood pressure (headaches, blurred vision, buzzing sound, anxiety, seizures, confusion); decreased urination; numbness or pain.
Common side effects of Atomoxetine include: irritability, dizziness, constipation, rash or itching sensation, cough, insomnia, stronger menstrual pains, loss of sex drive.
Note that this list does not include all possible side effects. Other side effects might occur depending on individual health conditions.
Do not use damaged capsules of the medication. If the medication gets into your eyes, rinse them with plenty of water and consult a medical specialist.
As Atomoxetine may lead to the clouding of consciousness, avoid taking it before driving or other activities that require utmost concentration.
Notify your medical specialist of all medications you have been or are using before starting the course of Atomoxetine. Interaction with the following medications can be especially strong: Proventil, Ventolin, Cordarone, Pacerone, Wellbutrin, Zyban, Celebrex, Tagamet, Adriamycin, Dolophine, Methadose, Reglan, Quin-G, Norvir, Kaletra, Zantac, Lamisil, antidepressants such as Celexa, Anafranil, Lexapro, Prozac, Sarafem, Luvox, Paxil, Zoloft and sleeping pills such as Benadryl, Unisom, Chlor-Trimeton.
Atomoxetine can also interact with other medications.
If you have missed your dose of Atomoxetine, make sure to take it as soon as possible. However, two doses should never be taken at the same time, so if the time for the next dose has almost come, DO NOT take the dose you have missed.
Atomoxetine should be stored at approximately 77°F (25°C), well out of reach of children and pets. Avoid storing the medication in the bathroom.
